New Roof-top Outdoor Chamber Facility
Our newly completed 120-m3 "One Atmosphere" chamber
is located on the roof of the School of Public Health, above a supporting laboratory (shown below). This chamber was developed to study both gas- and particle-phase chemistry as well as combustion sources; it simultaneously permits the exposure of animals and lung cells to fresh and aged chamber atmospheres. Sample and signal lines from the chamber are fed through ports in the roof. Animal facilities are located on the first floor of the same building wing. The supporting laboratory contains both PM sampling and analytical instruments, and tissue culture facilities that will be used for the in vitro cell exposures to the chamber. This lab will also be used to conduct the in vivo exposures with mice.

The UNC chamber facility is located in a rural area of North Carolina, approximately 30 miles south of the UNC campus. There are three teflon chambers currently in use, a 300m3 dual gas-phase chamber, and two dual 25m3 aerosol chambers. A 190m3 aerosol chamber is currently being remodeled and should be operating again by mid-summer 2002.
All chambers are covered with 5ml FEP Teflon film and use natural sunlight as their radiant energy source. The sampling, data acquisition, and calibration instruments are located in an attached lab. Complete detailed information on the chambers and lab-set up is available here.
